A Good Dog Day: what does a dog need to be happy?

A happy, healthy dog needs more than walks and a routine. It’s the right mix of physical, mental and emotional care that shapes their overall wellbeing.

Every dog deserves a good day. Below, we break down each of the five ingredients, show how we bring them to life at WagWorks dog daycare, and share expert advice on doing the same at home.

The five ingredients of A Good Dog Day

Every good day is made up of a combination of five building blocks. Here’s what each one means for your dog.

Move

A good day for a dog isn’t about hitting a step count. Movement is as much about exploring as exercise, and how much your dog needs depends on a variety of factors including age, health and breed. A proper run, a slow sniff, a moment to stand and take in the world: it all counts and will be different for every dog.

Think

A happy dog needs to use their brain as well as their legs. Chances to think, explore and make choices let them use their natural canine behaviours, which is a big part of a good day. Enrichment can be as simple as sniffing, chewing and watching the world go by – all ways that help them engage meaningfully in the world around them.

Connect

Dogs are social, and a good day has room for company: time with the people they love, time with other dogs, and time getting to know the environment around them. It’s the quality of those connections that counts, and the aim is a dog who feels calm and secure wherever they are.

Rest

A good day isn’t packed from start to finish. Sleep is only part of it: dogs also need time to switch off and recover between activities. A restless, overexcited dog often isn’t short on exercise. They’re short on rest.

Grow

Your dog’s growth isn’t defined by a single milestone. It happens when Move, Think, Connect and Rest come together. When their physical, mental, social and emotional needs are all supported, they have the foundations to learn, build confidence and thrive every day.

A Good Dog Day at WagWorks

WagWorks is a membership club for dogs – offering daycare, healthcare, training and grooming all under one roof. Our care and advice is expert-led, and giving our members a good dog day, every day is at the heart of what we do.

Here are just some of the ways we incorporate the five core ingredients into our dog daycare in London:

  • Move: At WagWorks, our dogs have a great mix of activities, including mooching, play, and walks. This gives them a balanced and appropriate level of exercise and stimulation, rather than repetitive high-intensity activity.
  • Think: Enrichment activities are embedded into your dog’s daycare routine, so they can problem-solve and make their own choices. This includes snuffle mats, 1:1 training and foraging opportunities.
  • Connect: We get to know your dog’s temperament and energy, and group dogs in our daycare parks with compatible friends. This helps them build confidence and enjoy great social time managed by our expert carers.
  • Rest: We have scheduled rest times twice a day – to help your dog properly recharge. We create a comfortable and safe environment, with low lights and monitored quiet time so they can fully switch off.
  • Grow: We help you and your dog bring everything together and keep growing, no matter their age. Members benefit from sessions with our expert trainers and behaviourists, plus workshops and talks. We also run puppy classes throughout the year, to help your dog thrive from day one.

Every part of the day is planned around a balance of all five, so your dog is happy, healthy and leaves daycare properly fulfilled.

It can be as simple as learning your dog’s exercise needs, giving them everyday choices to encourage them to think, learning about their body language to build a strong connection, and scheduling downtime.
